Edward Alleyn's 1619 foundation was intended to combine education with a charitable purpose, and that dual identity still gives Dulwich College its particular shape. The senior school is a boys' day and boarding community from Year 7 to Year 13, while younger pupils attend DUCKS. The College's long history is visible in its foundation, but current life is centred on study, houses and participation.
The academic route moves from a broad lower and middle school curriculum to GCSE or IGCSE choices, then to three A levels with Advanced Electives, Liberal Studies and an EPQ or Extended Essay. English, mathematics, science, languages, humanities, arts and technology all have a place. The Dulwich Diploma brings the upper years together around academic and wider achievement.
Boarding begins in Year 9, with full, weekly and occasional options in four houses. Day pupils belong to houses too, so the community is not divided between residential and non-residential routes. Seventeen sports, concerts, expeditions, societies, community action, the CCF and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award keep the week active beyond the timetable.
Admissions are direct and selective, with entry points in Years 3 to 5, 7, 9 and 12. Assessments vary by age: Year 9 candidates take the College's own tests, while sixth-form applicants complete examinations and interviews. Academic, music and sports scholarships sit alongside bursary support.
