Delta Independent School

Delta Independent School is designed for pupils whose education has been disrupted and who arrive through a referral route rather than a conventional direct application. The small co-educational day provision in Consett serves ages 13-16, has capacity for 80 pupils, no boarding and no sixth form.

Full-time places are available to pupils referred by local maintained schools, pupil referral units and the local authority when permanent exclusion is a risk. Pupils begin dual registered with their maintained school and may later become registered solely with Delta, making transition and communication part of the placement itself.

Learning is organised around individual interests and needs, with academic and vocational qualifications selected for each pathway. Options include GCSEs, functional skills, BTEC and courses in travel and tourism, art and design, hair and beauty, enterprise and construction. Almost all pupils have identified SEND, with planned adaptations and specialist support built into the provision.

Careers guidance, local-college progression and off-site experiences sit alongside classroom work. All relevant standards were met in March 2025. Parliament Street in Consett is the setting for a focused secondary placement whose purpose is re-engagement, qualification and a managed route back into education or onward training.
