Overview
Dauntsey's School was founded in West Lavington in 1542 under the will of William Dauntesey, a Master of the Mercers' Company. It became Dauntsey's Agricultural School in 1895, reflecting its rural setting and practical roots. Today it is a co-educational day and boarding school in Wiltshire, with the Mercers' connection still part of its story.
Teaching moves from a broad Lower School curriculum through GCSE years and a flexible Sixth Form. The three sciences are taught separately in Years 7-9; Sixth Form students can combine A Levels with the EPQ and Core Maths. Timetabled Complementary Curriculum adds current affairs, critical thinking, wellbeing and life skills.
Adventure runs through school life. On the 150-acre campus and surrounding area, pupils can try camping, kayaking and climbing; older pupils can sail Jolie Brise, the school's Tall Ship, and take longer expeditions. Twelve Houses provide the community structure alongside sport, music, drama, clubs and service.
Dauntsey's publishes entry at 11, 13 and 16. Year 7 uses examinations and interviews; 13+ uses the ISEB Common Pre-Test and interview or the school's exams; Sixth Form considers predicted grades, a reference and interview. Day and boarding places are available in the Sixth Form.
