Charterhouse carries its history in the buildings, grounds and house life of Godalming, but its current character is shaped by the way those elements work together. Day pupils and boarders belong to the same co-educational community, with academic study, sport, the arts and pastoral support organised around houses that function as the social centre of daily life.
The academic programme moves from a broad foundation in the younger senior years to A levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form. Alongside subject knowledge, pupils work on critical thinking, communication, creativity, problem-solving and adaptability. FutureU extends that preparation with practical experiences and the Charterhouse Entrepreneurship Diploma.
House life gives the week its continuity. Boarding houses are homes as well as accommodation, with pastoral staff supporting wellbeing and pupils taking part in sport, music, drama, art and societies. The Artifex programme adds pupil-led creative events, bringing different interests together and giving students opportunities to make and present work for the wider community.
Entry is selective and follows a defined route for each age group. Applications at 11+, 13+, 14+ and Sixth Form involve registration, assessment and interview, with a current-school reference forming part of the picture. Pupils can join as day students or boarders, and Sixth Form applicants choose between A levels and the IB according to the course and the kind of study they want to pursue.
