Overview

Caterham began in 1811 in Lewisham, founded by the Reverend John Townsend to provide boarding education for sons of Congregationalist ministers. It moved to the Harestone Valley in 1884, opened to day boys and laymen's sons in 1890, and merged with Eothen School for Girls in 1995. It is now co-educational, day and boarding.

The curriculum is broad before pupils specialise. The first two years include Latin, Mandarin, design and technology, computer science, art, music and drama alongside core subjects. Choice expands in Year 9 and at GCSE, with EDGE, Wellbeing, PE and Games continuing through the school. The Sixth Form offers an open choice of A levels.

Caterham teaches history through investigation, analysis and argument, with the Clio society adding speakers, competitions and theatre visits. Boarding is full, weekly or half-weekly, with entry points at 13+, 14+ and 16+. A specialist EAL department supports pupils who need additional English.

Admissions vary by age and by day or boarding place. Boarding applicants take English, mathematics and critical-thinking papers at 13+ and 14+; 16+ applicants take papers related to intended A level subjects and critical thinking. Interviews and reports or references are also used, with separate day and Sixth Form application information.
