Canbury School began with five students on Kingston Hill in 1982, founded by John Wyatt for pupils who found large, anonymous comprehensives difficult to navigate. It opened in a converted former home of Sir Malcolm Campbell and Donald Campbell and became a charity in 1990. That small beginning still explains the emphasis on belonging and individual attention.
The mainstream curriculum is adapted to students' ability and strengths. Years 7 to 9 cover English, mathematics, science, humanities, languages, creative subjects, ICT, PE, PSHE, social group and wellbeing. Key Stage 4 combines English, mathematics and science with GCSE, iGCSE, BTEC and vocational options such as photography, Spanish, business, performing arts, sport and travel and tourism.
The wider week includes cross country, kayaking, football, netball, athletics, cricket and tennis, as well as literacy and dyslexia support, speech and language therapy, emotional literacy, pastoral and SEND interventions. Creative arts, chess, choir, coding and film add choice, while the one-year sixth form brings employability, work experience, EPQ and supported study.
Canbury is co-educational and caters for ages 11 to 18. Admission involves a visit, document review, assessment, trial days and discussion with parents or professionals where needed. There is no entrance exam, but an online assessment is completed during acquaintance days; offers depend on the school's ability to meet a student's needs and its terms and deposit.
