Bury Grammar School was founded in 1570 by Reverend Henry Bury, Reverend Peter Shaw and the third Earl of Derby. Its history runs from an early schoolhouse beside Bury Parish Church to the re-founded school opened in 1730. The current campus was established in 1903 and occupies a 45-acre estate in Bury.
The group is now an all-through independent school with pre-school, primary, senior and Sixth Form stages. Its senior provision includes separate boys’ and girls’ schools, while the newer Primary Division is co-educational. This creates distinct senior communities within one wider institution.
The curriculum policy includes subject-specialist teaching, modern languages and a full enrichment programme. French is followed by German or Spanish. Music, sport, clubs, productions, trips, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the Combined Cadet Force extend learning beyond lessons; the CCF has more than 300 members and leads Founders’ Day.
Bury Grammar describes senior admission as an assessed route. Its policy covers an independent day school for ages 3 to 18, with age-appropriate tests, references and an interview, subject to places. Senior open events include visits, taster lessons and an entrance examination.
