Burgess Hill Girls

Burgess Hill Girls began in 1906 when Beatrice Goode and her sisters Ada and Patricia founded a Charlotte Mason PNEU school. The school moved to its present site in 1928, and its early history included boys before the community developed into the girls' day and boarding school it is today. That long evolution remains visible in a campus shaped by successive gymnasia, halls, boarding houses and teaching buildings.

The senior years combine a broad curriculum with room for close study. History can move from Tudor and Stuart politics to industrialisation, women's suffrage and twentieth-century international events, with source analysis and discussion forming part of the work. The Sixth Form continues that academic breadth, giving older pupils a route that connects detailed subject study with independent thinking.

Boarding begins from Year 7, and short-stay courses allow pupils in Years 7 to 10 and Year 12 to experience the regular timetable and wider co-curricular life. Sport, music, creative activity, trips and visiting speakers bring a social dimension to the academic programme. The result is a girls' community in which day and boarding pupils can take part in the same school rhythm.

The application route depends on the year group and the kind of place sought. Short-course applicants provide previous-school information, a reference, an interview and an English paper rather than sitting a single entrance examination. Other admissions use age-appropriate assessment alongside the pupil's existing work, giving the school a way to understand readiness as well as attainment.
