Bristol Grammar School

Bristol Grammar School began with a Royal Charter issued in 1532 for the teaching of good manners and literature. After moving from St Bartholomew's Hospital to Unity Street, it reached its present Tyndalls Park site in 1879. The school became independent in 1979 and fully co-educational in 1980, later adding an Infant School in 2010. Today it is a 4-18 co-educational day school in central Bristol.

The through-school route runs from the Infant and Junior School into the Senior School and Sixth Form. At Sixth Form, pupils choose three core A levels and at least one elective, with no subject-blocking system: the timetable is individually built around the student's choices. The school also describes small classes and substantial teaching time across the A level programme, giving the post-16 stage a deliberately tailored shape.

Learning continues through Games and Activities, subject societies, the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award and the Ten Tors Challenge. Sport is supported by AstroTurf and 3G pitches, while the Failand site provides woodland and a low-ropes course used for Forest School. These details give the school a distinctive Bristol setting, joining historic buildings at Tyndalls Park with outdoor and practical spaces elsewhere.

Admissions are handled directly by the school rather than through a local-authority application. Year 7 is the main Senior School entry point, with January assessments including creative writing, comprehension, problem-solving and arithmetic papers for 2026 entry; Years 8-10 use a different January assessment arrangement. Entry is also possible in other year groups when places are available, so the relevant year and current assessment timetable matter.
