Overview

Brighton Girls was founded in 1876 as the tenth school established by the Girls’ Day School Trust and moved to The Temple in 1880. It is now an all-through girls’ school, with the senior site on Montpelier Road. The four Houses - Grey, Gurney, Lyttelton and Stanley - connect present school life with that early history of girls’ education.

Years 7 to 9 retain a broad core of English, mathematics, separate sciences, a modern language, humanities, creative subjects and physical education. GCSE choices add computer science, Latin, dance, drama, design technology and philosophy, religion and ethics alongside the compulsory subjects. The route keeps academic breadth in place while allowing greater specialisation as pupils move towards examinations.

The Temple Project Qualification gives Years 7 to 11 a voluntary independent project with teacher-supervisor support between the summer term and autumn. The senior curriculum links it to preparation for the Extended Project Qualification in Sixth Form, while STEM challenges and the STEM Family Challenge Evening extend the school’s interest in applied problem-solving beyond ordinary lessons.

Admissions are direct and vary by stage. Reception to Year 2 uses informal teacher-led assessment, Years 3 to 6 use verbal and non-verbal reasoning, and Year 7 is the main Senior intake. Early Doors offers a Year 5 route with spring assessments, while Year 6 applicants are assessed in December. The combination of GDST history, a broad girls’ curriculum and staged entry routes defines the senior-school experience.
