Overview

Bolton School Girls’ Division grew from the Bolton Girls’ Day School, opened in 1877, and became part of the 1915 foundation created under William Lever. Girls can continue from age 7 through the senior school and sixth form to 18. The division shares the wider Bolton School campus but retains its own leadership, culture and girls-only educational route.

The 11-18 curriculum includes the senior years, sixth form, the Horizons programme and the Riley Sixth Form Centre. Academic work is joined to sport, leadership, community activity, music, drama and outdoor learning. THRIVE lessons add PSHEE and relationships and sex education to the formal curriculum, keeping personal development visible alongside examination subjects.

The senior years have their own curriculum and pastoral organisation within the girls-only division. The Riley Sixth Form Centre, Horizons programme and THRIVE lessons keep academic work, personal development and transition to later study connected across the older year groups.

Admissions are selective and managed by the Girls’ Division. Year 7 and Year 12 are the main entry points, with other years dependent on available places. Year 7 applicants sit January GL Assessment papers in English, mathematics and non-verbal reasoning, usually followed by an interview; applications also require an application form, identification and a fee. Sixth-form and in-year routes have their own requirements.
