Bolton School Boys' Division

Bolton School Boys’ Division combines a boys-only senior route with the wider Bolton School Foundation. Boys can enter from age 7 and continue through the senior school and sixth form to 18, sharing a campus with the Girls’ Division and Primary Division while retaining a distinct identity. The foundation’s history reaches back to the 1516 grammar-school reference and the 1915 reorganisation under William Lever.

Years 7 to 11 follow a structured timetable with homework, internal examinations and GCSE preparation. Sixth-form pupils have weekly assignments and private-study periods, while learning support covers specific learning difficulties, disabilities and English as an additional language. Mentoring and study-skills work sit within the academic route, giving the senior years a defined framework for progress and support.

Sport, outdoor learning, music, drama, societies, community activity and Patterdale Hall extend the experience beyond lessons. Tutors and heads of year monitor academic development through written reports and meetings with parents. That combination gives the boys’ senior years a distinctive balance of structured study, activity and individual support.

Senior entry is selective and run by the Boys’ Division. Year 7 and Year 12 are the main entry points, while later-year applications depend on vacancies. Year 7 applicants sit January GL Assessment papers in English, mathematics and non-verbal reasoning, normally followed by an interview and a report from the current school. Sixth-form and in-year applicants follow separate requirements.
