Overview

A bequest from Peter Blundell founded Blundell's in 1604, and the school has continued to reshape its community over four centuries. Girls joined the sixth form in 1975 and full co-education followed in 1996. Today the Devon school combines day education from age 3 to 18 with boarding from 11, including a Prep School on the same campus.

Years 7 and 8 offer a broad introduction to subject areas before GCSE choices are made at the end of Year 9. The senior list covers sciences, mathematics, humanities, classics, languages, creative subjects, computing and sport. Sixth-form pupils choose from 27 subjects and can add an EPQ, Olympiads, essay competitions and MOOCs, giving the post-16 route room for independent academic ambition.

House life shapes the daily experience for everyone. Day, weekly, flexi and full boarders belong to a House with tutoring, pastoral care, friendship and a place to work. Younger pupils begin in the co-educational School House, move to single-sex senior Houses in Year 9 and return to a co-educational Year 13 House focused on preparation for life beyond school.

Senior entry is organised around 11+, 13+ and 16+ routes. At 11+, English and mathematics papers sit alongside wider entrance testing, interview and a current-school report; overseas applicants can expect English and mathematics testing and an interview where possible. Academic, music and other awards, bursaries and services-family support are available, but the assessment route depends on the entry point.
