Birchfield School

Beamish House, an Arts and Crafts country house designed by M.H. Baillie Scott, gives Birchfield School a distinctive setting and a strong sense of continuity. The school remained a prep school through age 13 until 2021, then expanded to a senior route through 16. Its current shape joins that prep-school inheritance to a newer GCSE pathway for children from Reception to Year 11.

The longer day and specialist teaching allow the curriculum to follow the National Curriculum while adding Food Technology, Enrichment and Outdoor Learning. From Year 3, pupils meet subject specialists; preparation can include 11+ and 13+ examinations and scholarships, while senior pupils build towards GCSEs. Years 7 and 8 establish foundations before the comprehensive three-year GCSE programme begins in Year 9.

Small classes and close knowledge of individual pupils run through the educational model. Senior pupils have sport, music, art, trips, external activities, enrichment and leadership opportunities, with coding, debating, yoga, tennis, fencing and business enterprise among the wider programme. Charity, social responsibility and "The Birchfield Way" connect those activities with the school's stated values. The route ends at 16, with guidance towards post-GCSE destinations including St Dominic's Grammar School in Brewood.

Entry is direct and varies by age. Year 7 and Year 9 applicants normally take mathematics, English creative writing and verbal reasoning tests, followed by a short interview and school references. Other senior applicants may need tests, a taster experience and references; entry outside the key years begins with a visit. There is no sixth form, so families need to consider the post-16 transition as part of the decision.
