Overview

Berkhamsted's story reaches back to 1541, when John Incent, Dean of St Paul's Cathedral, established the original school. Re-establishment followed in 1841, the Girls Grammar School opened in 1888, and the 1996 merger created the present family of schools. Old Hall now sits alongside Pre-Prep, Prep, Boys Senior, Girls Senior and co-educational Sixth campuses.

The senior model changes with age. Berkhamsted Boys and Berkhamsted Girls provide single-sex classroom education from 11 to 16, while the Sixth becomes co-educational from 16. Pupils move between campuses as they move through the curriculum, following a route from nursery to Sixth Form that combines distinct settings with a shared institutional history.

Common facilities and traditions link those settings. A sports centre includes a 25-metre pool and astro, while an outdoor centre provides high ropes and a theatre. The Combined Cadet Force and competitive rugby are longstanding parts of school life, giving the group shared activities and rituals alongside its separate senior classrooms.

Boarding has several forms. Flexi-boarding begins from Year 7; weekly and full boarding begin from Year 9 or Year 10 depending on the school, while Berkhamsted Sixth offers boarding from Year 12. Entry depends on stage, attainment, interview and school reference. Berkhamsted Girls does not have an official Year 9 entry point, and boarding places remain subject to availability.
