BEP Academy grew from the Business Education Partnership’s alternative-education work. Its Vocational Inclusion Programme began in 1999, and BEP Academy became a registered independent school in November 2017. Provision now operates from Romford and Basildon, serving East London and south-west Essex through a model designed for pupils who need a different route through the secondary years.
The academy is for Year 9, 10 and 11 pupils, not an all-through independent-school population. Places may be dual-rolled with an existing secondary school or held on BEP’s own roll. Entry-level qualifications and GCSEs are combined with vocational courses, allowing the programme to keep academic progression in view while making room for practical learning and preparation for work.
Classes normally contain eight to twelve pupils, with tutors working alongside a dedicated pastoral team. Mentoring, personal development and work experience are built into the week; in Years 10 and 11, work experience may be arranged as a block or as one or two days each week. Close adult support and participation are therefore part of the model, rather than additions to a conventional timetable.
Admission is referral-led. Pupils are referred by their current secondary school or local authority, unlike an open application to a mainstream independent senior school. BEP is registered as an alternative provider and special school for pupils aged 13 to 16, with provision for social, emotional and mental-health needs. That route is built around a pupil’s circumstances and commissioning arrangements, not a standard fee-paying entry process.
