Benenden School

Benenden began in 1923 when three teachers from Wycombe Abbey founded a girls' boarding school. After its first temporary term in Bickley, the community made its home at Hemsted Park, where 250 acres now frame a distinctive residential education. Its Complete Education places confidence, compassion, courage and courtesy alongside academic ambition, giving the school a clear character beyond examination results.

The curriculum includes substantial non-examined work. The enquiry-led Benenden Diploma was introduced for 11- and 12-year-olds in 2015, while the Professional Skills Programme gives Sixth Formers a structured preparation for life beyond school. In 2025, the non-examined curriculum received significant-strength recognition, reflecting the place of enquiry, skills and personal development in the wider programme.

Boarding shapes the daily organisation. Full boarders and day students share the boarding community, with communal living, personal growth and the school's values at its centre. The campus has continued to develop around that life: the Centenary Hall and Sir David K. P. Li Music School opened in 2022, adding substantial spaces for gathering and music to the historic setting.

Admissions distinguish 11+ and 13+ entry. An 11+ offer cannot be deferred to 13+, so a fresh 13+ process is required. Bursary support is intended for day applicants, with boarding help considered only exceptionally, while scholarships recognise talent. These distinctions matter as much as the entry age when families consider the route into Benenden.
