Barnard Castle School grew from the North Eastern County School, established through a Victorian education project and opened at its permanent Newgate site in 1886. It is now a co-educational day and boarding school for pupils from prep age through sixth form, with historic buildings and a long boarding tradition shaping the sense of place.
