Benedictine tradition is the centre of Ampleforth College's educational model. Spiritual life, community and individual care sit beside academic work, while boarding and day routes are treated as equally important parts of the co-educational Catholic college. The residential dimension belongs to the education itself, rather than simply to accommodation.
Sport, music, drama, dance, service, outdoor activity and the Combined Cadet Force sit around classroom study. Houses, day pupils and boarding give that activity a shared setting, creating a daily rhythm in which worship, organised work and community life remain close together.
Admissions are arranged by age, with a separate route for overseas applicants. Standard assessments include Mathematics, English and Non-Verbal Reasoning, followed by an informal interview and activities session. Overseas applicants take English and Mathematics papers, attend an interview and provide reports; offers take account of reports, assessment, interview and a school reference.
Visits are part of the route into the college. Prospective pupils can meet the Registrar and relevant staff, tour the grounds and spend time with pupils, often over House Lunch. The experience makes the Benedictine, boarding-and-day community tangible before a place is accepted.
