Who this guide helps

Sutton has five fully selective state grammar schools. They share the Selective Eligibility Test (SET) as a first stage, but a shared exam does not mean identical admission policies or one interchangeable set of school choices.

This guide concerns Year 7 entry. The boys’ or girls’ intake below should not be inferred from sixth-form arrangements. Families living outside Sutton can investigate the route too, but must read each school’s geographical and priority provisions rather than assuming all applicants are treated identically.

Compare schools that match your child’s Year 7 eligibility. Sutton, Cheam and the different Wallington school sites create different journeys: check the actual entrance and bus stop, not simply the town label.

Greenshaw High School also participates in the SET for a limited number of selective places. It is partially selective, not a sixth fully selective Sutton grammar school. Its route must be read separately.

How the SET and second stages work

For 2027 entry, the SET uses English and maths multiple-choice papers. It does not include verbal or non-verbal reasoning. Use the published arrangements for your child’s cohort before choosing familiarisation materials.

2. First stage

   Sit the SET

   A qualifying first-stage outcome is not a final school offer. Read the result instructions for the next assessment.

3. Second stage

   Follow the relevant invitation

   For 2027 entry, all five grammar schools require further assessment, including Wallington County Grammar School. Check the applicable schools’ shared or separate arrangements.

4. Apply

   Name schools on the CAF

   Complete the home local authority application and any school-specific forms. Schools apply their own admission rules after assessment.

Greenshaw’s selective route uses the SET without the grammar schools’ second stage under the current arrangements. This distinction is one reason generic advice about “passing the Sutton test” can be misleading.

What to answer before you compare results

1. How does this school use the assessments?

   Read component requirements, weighting and the final eligibility or rank information for the correct year.

2. Which priority category applies?

   Check address provisions, defined priority groups and evidence deadlines. Do not copy rules from another Sutton school.

3. Does the school day work?

   Try the journey at arrival time and after an activity. Include the final walk from the stop.

4. What support and curriculum fit your child?

   Ask about transition, homework, pastoral care, SEND and subject choices. Use a visit for the questions the website cannot answer.
