Kent Test registration is open for September 2027 entry. Kent County Council says the form opened on Monday 1 June 2026 and closes on Wednesday 1 July 2026.
That deadline creates a very practical month for parents. The form matters, but the better question is whether the schools behind the registration still make sense. If you are only registering because Kent has a big grammar school map, pause long enough to name the schools that could actually fit your child, journey and application.
Use the full Kent Test dates page alongside the Kent grammar schools guide if you need the county picture before the deadline.
Check 1: which Kent cluster are you really researching?
Kent is not one neat school commute. A family looking at Dartford Grammar School is often making a different decision from a family comparing The Judd School, Tonbridge Grammar School and The Skinners’ School.
Before registration closes, write down the local cluster that matters:
- Dartford and Wilmington
- Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells
- Maidstone
- Canterbury and East Kent
- another specific Kent route that works from home
If your list still jumps across the county, open Kent grammar schools and cut it by journey before reading more profiles.
Check 2: whether your child may need access arrangements
Kent says families need to speak to the child’s primary school SENCO before registration if a disability or special educational need may affect access to testing. Requests for access arrangements are not accepted after 1 July 2026.
This is easy to miss because parents can think of registration as a quick admin job. If support might be needed, the school conversation is part of the deadline.
Check 3: what the result will and will not decide
Kent County Council is clear that being grammar assessed does not guarantee a grammar school place. That sentence should shape how parents use the test result later.
A strong result may keep several schools in play. A suitable-for-grammar result may still need distance, oversubscription criteria, and the secondary application form beside it. The Kent Test score explainer is useful before results day because it sets expectations before the email arrives.
Check 4: whether the school would be listed on the CAF
Registration for the Kent Test is not the same as applying for a school place. GOV.UK tells parents applying for secondary school places to use the local council application process and list schools in preference order.
If a Kent grammar school would not make your real preference list after results, think carefully before adding the test to an already busy year. If it would make the list, keep the school policy, journey and likely alternatives together.
A calmer Kent registration workflow
-
Name the schools before submitting the form
The Kent Test is county-wide, but your family decision probably is not. Name the schools that could genuinely fit.
-
Check the daily route, not only the distance
Kent school choices can look close on a map and still be awkward across a school week.
-
Read the admissions policy for each named school
A grammar assessment is only one part of the offer process.
-
Keep a non-grammar option in view
The registration window is a good time to check realistic all-ability options too, not only selective schools.
